Lamb’s Ear Seeds (Stachys byzantina) grow into a low-maintenance perennial prized for its soft, velvety foliage and silvery-gray color. Also known as woolly betony, this resilient plant forms a dense ground cover that adds texture and contrast to garden beds, borders, and pathways. Its gentle feel and unique appearance make it a favorite in both ornamental and practical landscapes.
Adaptable and drought-tolerant once established, lamb’s ear thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs well in poor, rocky, or dry soils. In late spring to early summer, plants send up slender flower spikes topped with small purple blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This combination of beauty, toughness, and ecological value makes lamb’s ear a reliable choice for long-term plantings.
Soft Texture and Reliable Ground Cover:
- Velvety, silvery leaves with a distinctive woolly texture
- Forms a spreading perennial ground cover
- Produces small purple flowers in late spring and early summer
- Excellent contrast plant for mixed borders and pathways
Why Customers Love Lamb’s Ear:
- Extremely low maintenance once established
- Drought tolerant and adaptable to poor soils
- Attractive to pollinators during bloom
- Unique texture that stands out in the landscape
How to Use / How to Grow:
Sow lamb’s ear seeds in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Keep soil lightly moist during germination, then reduce watering as plants establish. Lamb’s ear prefers good drainage and does not tolerate consistently wet soil.
Plants spread gradually to form a dense mat and can be divided or thinned as needed. Remove spent flower stalks to maintain a tidy appearance, or allow blooms to support pollinators.
